At the core of a just, equitable and fair society is a system of public post-secondary education that is accessible to everyone. By standing in solidarity with students, workers and community members can help stop attacks on our public services and protect accessible post-secondary education. The fight for public education in Canada is part of a global fight to maintain education as a basic right for all.
We know that the people, united, will never be defeated and students need the solidarity of our labour partners, civil society groups and social justice organizations to win this fight. We are stronger together.

Our members believe strongly in the goals of your campaign: to ensure universal access to education, regardless of financial circumstances; to improve equity of access for groups that continue to face barriers to participation in higher education; and to ensure that our public education system continues to be public, both in its goals and its funding.
The student and union movement have been long-time allies in the fight for properly resourced public services, good jobs, strong communities, and a more just and equal society. We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you and the students your organization unites. When public services, workers, jobs, pay and benefits have come under attack, students have been there on the front lines – waving your banner high and proud in support of our members. In the spirit of solidarity that has united our movements for so long, we will be proud to return that favour on November 2 at campuses and communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Resolution of CUPE’s National Executive Board
Re: Post-Secondary Education
CUPE NATIONAL WILL:
- Support the Canadian Federation of Students’ call for public, high-quality, post-secondary education that is accessible by all Canadians.
- Endorse the CFS National Day of Action, November 2, 2016.
- Encourage our members on university and college campuses to participate in campus activities on that day.
To the Canadian Federation of Students,
I am writing to share UNITE HERE Canada’s endorsement of the CFS’s upcoming National Day of Action on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.
On behalf of the 3.3 million members of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), I want to extend our support and endorsement for the National Day of Action taking place on November 2,2016, and the demand for the elimination of university and college tuition fees across the country.
Post-secondary education is a public good that benefits the whole of society. Skyrocketing tuition fees, rising student debt, fewer faculty, larger class sizes, program cuts, and the commercialization of research are all symptoms of chronic public underfunding.
