An Access to Information request filed by MP Charlie Angus reveals that the longstanding 2% cap on Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) for Indigenous students has resulted in an 18.3 per cent decline in the number of students it funds. Over the same 20 years, the First Nations population has grown 29%.
According to Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde, there are 10,000 students on a wait list trying to access post-secondary education. In the 2015 federal election, the Liberals campaigned on a promise to invest an additional $50 million annually in the PSSSP. But once in power, they failed to include this promise in their first federal budget. Angus asks the question, “Why was that promise considered breakable?”
